Elk hunting the creek is challenging but extremely rewarding if you follow these few simple steps. In the mornings cool air pull down the river allowing for spot and stock potential. Keep movement to a minimum. Rule of thumb, if you can see an elk they can see you. The tall oak brush give the elk terrific advantages over us, use vantage points to look across from ridge to ridge rather than looking up the face of the mountains.
In the evenings elk are thirsty from bedding down during the heat of the day and need to water. Be sure to avoid letting your scent carry up the mountain towards where the elk are bedded. It is best to hunt from blinds in the evenings. You may hear bugles in the distance but once you have decided to hunt a blind do not leave the blind until after dark or you risk spooking elk as they feed in the near by oak brush. Once elk are spooked they will not feel safe in the area for many weeks. Commit to your spot, Identify your shooting lanes, find a comfortable shooting position, wait it out.
